NOIRE: Hello Maladist, could you introduce yourself to our readers?
MODAÏS: Maladist is a Black/Death metal band with influences such as Inquisition, Immolation, Hate, and Asagraum. We explore plagues throughout history; notably, our debut album focuses on the Plague of Athens.
NOIRE: Your band was formed last year. What made you want to create "Maladist"?
MODAÏS: Maladist is the evolution of a former death metal project, Voïd Tower. We wanted to create a more ambitious project with a strong theme.
NOIRE : You released a new album on June 3rd, titled "The Gates of Parthenon." What was the creative process behind it?
MODAÏS: We took some of Voïd Tower's existing tracks and modified them, while also creating new ones. The most challenging part was finding the plague theme to guide our lyrics and conducting in-depth research into this historical event.
NOIRE : Judging by the cover art and the themes explored, it seems to me that you intended to evoke the historical episode of the Plague of Athens in the 5th century BC. Have I correctly identified the subject?
MODAÏS: Yes, you’ve really hit the nail on the head. We wanted to focus on this epidemic first because it is the best-documented plague in history.
We think it’s a great starting point; plus, ancient Greece has an identity that is very inspiring for our music.
NOIRE : What did you enjoy most about producing this album?
MODAÏS: Crafting the album intro, the "Oracle" intro, and the outro was a very enjoyable experience. It allowed us to deepen the album's atmosphere—finding simple melodies to support the ritualistic clean vocals and percussion...
It was a fluid, straightforward, and highly rewarding process. Creating the costumes, masks, and logo involved a lengthy search to find the right elements. We still need to refine these aspects further to achieve the atmosphere we want to bring to the stage.
NOIRE : You’ve already performed live to present the album to your audience and have a few shows scheduled for the coming months. What is your experience of performing live?
MODAÏS: We’re playing our first show at Monster's Art in Fréjus, alongside Squirt Terror and Skaphos. They’re great bands, but more importantly, good friends. We’re proud to share our first stage with mates.
We also have another show scheduled in Lyon on July 30th, with more to come...
NOIRE: You’ve already performed live to present the album to your audience and have a few shows scheduled for the coming months. What is your experience of performing live?
MODAÏS: We are already brainstorming ideas for a second album; in the meantime, we are booking as many shows as possible across France and are very open to co-billing proposals.
